Adapted from the novel with the same name, the plot of The Killer’s Shopping List revolves around a mysterious murder case that occurs near an apartment building in the outskirts of Seoul. The murder scene is near a neighbourhood supermarket, and the only clue is a receipt from the mart.

Throughout the story, audiences will witness the characters’ synergy, their growth, and their thrilling story of pursuing a criminal.

Lee Kwang-soo will play the role of Ahn Dae-sung, who was once considered a genius with his incredible memory, observation skills, and mental arithmetic ability.

However, after failing his ninth-grade civil service exam thrice, he was unable to be employed and had to resort to working in the neighbourhood supermarket, MS Mart, owned by his mother.

AOA’s Seolhyun will star as Do Da-hee, Dae-sung’s girlfriend and a passionate police officer who works in the Odong district. Apart from being a hot-blooded detective, she is also intelligent and has a lovely charm.

Jin Hee-kyung will play Han Myeong-suk, Dae-sung’s mother. She is an easygoing and strong boss to her employees and an even more impressive mother who fiercely protects her family. She, like Da-hee, loves and supports Dae-sung no matter what circumstances he faces.

The director’s vision for the drama

The director, Lee Eon-hee, shared in an interview that she received a proposal to make a film based on the novel.

After reading through the story, she became intrigued by the characters and their life in the supermarket.

She thus proposed an eight-part series instead, as the story would benefit from a more structured plot with well-developed characters.

She also voiced that the mart in the drama is not a big supermarket chain, but a local and close-knit supermarket. In fact, the filming of the show was done in a real supermarket that had closed down.

In The Killer’s Shopping List, she wishes to establish the idea that although customers don’t really pay much attention to supermarket employees, the workers are aware of customers who come regularly, and can even understand a customer better than their own loved ones.

Lee Eon-hee revealed that items commonly found in supermarkets, such as a kitchen knife, a can opener or even a pair of chopsticks, will be used in unexpected ways in the drama.
